Water conservation with crushed rock?

True not having a lawn or more vegetation in your yard may save water but what about other considerations as far as maintenance, sustainability?

Rock and gravel groundcovers can lead to unspoken taboos – that nothing shall hinder the view of bare rock and gravel. So, many end up blowing, raking, or vacuuming up leaf drop – strip mining nutrients and organic matter out of their landscapes. This practice can create the “need” to import synthetic fertilzers to replace the lost nutrients.
